Machine Learning techniques have been used at the LHC for a long time. Jet
sub-structure has become an especially active field for new ideas in this
direction. I will discuss how jet sub-stucture has become an established field
in the last decade, what the current challenges are, and in what sense machine
learning is the next logical step. Specifially, top tagging has many applications
in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. It allows us to to test
different approaches, to benchmark new tools, and most importantly to understand
how deep learning analyses actually work. This makes it a role model for the
conceptual progress we will see in LHC analysis ideas and techniques in the coming
