Bruno Bento Valeixo will present 'The species scale for busy people (and how on earth it is related to Quantum Gravity)'
Dozens of works have been studying the so-called "species scale" and how it relates to string theory and the swampland conjectures. But what is the species scale, really? And why do swampland practitioners like it so much? Hopefully this talk will answer these and other related questions in a (somewhat) interesting way.
(Spoiler: it is a story about how a large number of species can bring down "cutoff" scales and what that means for the naively unreachable scale of quantum gravity)
The presentation will be based on the papers
1) Black Holes and Large N Species Solution to the Hierarchy Problem, by Gia Dvali (Fortsch.Phys. 58 (2010) 528-536), available in
