PhD position in the theory of quantum algorithms

PhD position in the theory of quantum algorithms
  • We are offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position with an FPI grant from the Spanish government, under the supervision of Dr. Alvaro Alhambra at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Madrid. It is expected to start within the first few months of 2025 (from January to March).

The position is within the national project “Quantum algorithms for thermal equilibrium” focused on the theoretical design and convergence proofs of a variety of quantum algorithms, with an emphasis on those related to the exploration of statistical and thermal physics of many-body systems. The PhD project is expected to build on recent exciting progress on our understanding of quantum Gibbs sampling and quantum thermal states.

The work is expected to be of an eminently mathematical/analytical nature. As such, successful candidates should have a background on either quantum information theory, quantum computation, or theoretical quantum physics in a wide sense. Experience in those subjects at the masters level is desirable, although not a strict requirement. Candidates are nevertheless required to have finished the equivalent of a master’s degree on a related subject.

The project also includes funds for attending conferences and schools, and there are possibilities of an international research stay within it.

The successful candidate will join the Quantum Matter and Information group at IFT. The group currently which includes several other staff members, and a considerable number of other postdocs and students with whom collaborations are possible. IFT is one of the leading institutions in theoretical physics in Spain, and has consistently been credited as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence. The Institute offers a welcoming and vibrant research environment, with a wide range of activities and of experts in many areas of theoretical physics.

Interested candidates are invited to submit to alvaro.alhambra@csic.es

- A detailed curriculum vitae.

- Academic qualifications.

- The email contact details of (ideally) two potential references.

- Optionally, a link/file of a master or undergrad thesis.

We expect to gather all applications by the 15th of November but earlier applications are strongly encouraged.

The IFT is committed to equal opportunity and diversity. Women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and individuals with traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds or disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Further information on the project can be found here, and any other questions can be directed to alvaro.alhambra@csic.es
